Meet Chantal Cabaj, a Calgary inner city dweller, avid yogi and fitness advocate and the owner of Calgary’s roaming yoga studio: Homebody Yoga!
Chantal is a cool Calgary inner city dweller whose making waves in the Calgary Yoga scene. We sat down with Chantal to chat with her all about living in Calgary’s inner city, some of her favourite places and spaces, and what Homebody Yoga has in store for Calgary. Enjoy!
1. How long have you lived in Calgary?
I’ve lived in Calgary for 2 years since moving here from Edmonton.
2. What is your profession?
Lawyer [and yoga instructor! – What a cool combo!]
3. What else do you have going on to keep you busy?
I’ve recently started a roaming yoga studio, Homebody Yoga, that allows me to bring a little “om” to the homes in our bustling city. I also love running, sweating at all the great studios in Calgary and exploring all the options for play with my 3 and 1 year old niece and nephew.
4. What’s it like to be starting up a new business like that in Calgary? How’s the market these days for what you’re doing?
We are fortunate to have a lot of great options for yoga in the city, so it can be tricky to figure out how to create your own brand. However, if you are confident in your product, and keep putting yourself out there, you will eventually build a community. I love being able to connect with small groups of friends in the comfort of their homes and it’s really fun to gear classes toward specific communities, like busy professionals or brides. There is nothing better than hearing, “I really needed that!”.
5. You live up near Crescent Heights? What do you love about that community and living in Calgary’s inner city?
I live in Mount Pleasant and I LOVE IT. We have a great community league that puts on everything from wine and cheese nights to kids’ picnics. We are under a 10 block distance to the Crescent Heights ridge and Confederation Park and the Mount Pleasant Outdoor pool is just across the street! I love living in Calgary’s inner city as it makes exploring the festivals, shops and communities a breeze.
6. What’s your favourite spot to grab a coffee and just hang out?
Higher Ground Cafe in Kensington is a great place to curl up with a book and I also love the Orange Creamsicle tea at Velvet Cafe in Mount Pleasant.
7. Do you have a favourite spot to go for an afternoon run?
Either the Crescent Heights Ridge leading to the Curling Club stairs or through Confederation Park. I truly believe Confederation Park, with all of its underground tunnels is one of Calgary’s best kept secrets.
8. How about a favourite Calgary restaurant?
For a great, casual, authentic Mexican food I love El Charrito Taqueria in Renfrew.
9. What yoga or fitness studios do you love?
Yoga Santosha and Junction 9 for yoga; Studio Revolution and Union Athletica for a full on sweat!
