Attention all musicians and music lovers!
Today’s hidden gem is the National Music Centre located in downtown Calgary on 11th ave and 1st street SE. The National Music Centre has an amazing collection featuring more than 2000 musical instruments and artifacts including a 1679 harpsichord, early synthesizers and the piano on which Elton John composed his first four albums.
This place has seen everyone from Brian Eno and Pilip Glass to Billy Corgan and Gotye who have dropped by to check out the collection and even experiment with the instruments and sound equipment.
In February, the NMC announced it will be building a new eye-popping $135 million facility in East Village set to open in 2015. This will be Calgary’s first national cultural institution.
This place is full of history and all about music – definitely something worth checking out if Music is your thing. Who knows, you might even run into someone famous.
