D.C. Water has released a new plan to replace lead pipelines by 2030, including an increase in the cost for the plan to $1.5 billion. This is an increase from the original planned estimated cost, which was $300 to $500 million, and included in Mayor Muriel Bowser’s latest budget. The new plan, released on Friday, also includes discussion of a potential legislative mandate that would require all D.C. homeowners to replace their lead pipes.“Without that additional funding, we may need to work with our board to discuss possible customer rate increases,” said Will Elledge, D.C. Water Director of Engineering and Technical Services.D.C. Water said the goal is to also acquire funding that would avoid the additional financial burden on residents, which could be discounted or free service replacements for residents.“Since 2019, D.C. JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Attorneys general from 10 states plan to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, saying its failure to review and ensure emissions standards for residential wood-burning stoves has allowed the continued sale of appliances that could worsen pollution. That means programs that encourage people to trade in older stoves and other wood-burning appliances, such as forced-air furnaces, haven’t necessarily improved air quality, the states say. “If newer wood heaters do not meet cleaner standards, then programs to change out old wood heaters may provide little health benefits at significant public cost,” the states wrote Thursday in a 60-day notice of intent to sue.The states involved are Alaska, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington, as well as the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. They allege that the EPA’s current standards aren’t good enough and that even if they were, the agency’...Stokes flays Australia with 155 but can’t quite lead England over the line at Lord’s

LONDON (AP) — Nobody embraces an Ashes mission impossible like Ben Stokes. The England captain started the last day of the second test against Australia with his side four down and a distant 257 runs from victory at Lord’s.He was on 29 overnight, and cruised untroubled on Sunday morning. But when Australia’s smart dismissal of Jonny Bairstow left Stokes as England’s last recognized batsman, he flipped a switch. He was on 62 after 162 balls, but the tail was exposed. Sixteen balls later, he was on 100, and sending Lord’s into delirium. His third century in the fourth innings of a men’s Ashes test tied him for the most with Don Bradman and Bert Sutcliffe. The Australians spread themselves around the boundary to try and contain Stokes but couldn’t, and belief crept over Lord’s that England might actually pull off the greatest runs chase ever witnessed at the home of cricket.Stokes was dropped on 114 and 115, the latter marking the unbeaten score he ...Cole Custer declared NASCAR Xfinity Series winner after persistent rain washes out race

CHICAGO (AP) — Cole Custer was declared the winner of the NASCAR Xfinity Series race in downtown Chicago after persistent rain flooded the street course on Sunday. The race was scheduled for Saturday, but it was suspended after 25 laps because of a lightning strike in the area. NASCAR had planned to resume Sunday morning, but it scuttled that idea because of the rain and the scheduled Cup Series race.“With standing water and flooding a significant issue at the race track and throughout the city, there was no option to return to racing prior to shifting to NASCAR Cup Series race operations,” NASCAR said in a statement.Returning on Monday “was an option we chose not to employ,” NASCAR said in its statement, citing its partnership with the city and the fact that nearly half of the Xfinity race had been completed.NASCAR also canceled concerts by Miranda Lambert and Charley Crockett because of flooding in Lower Hutchison Field. The first Cup Series race on a street course is schedule...NASCAR-Xfinity The Loop 121 Results
