MILAN (AP) — French luxury conglomerate Kering has reached a cash deal to purchase a 30% stake in Italian fashion house Valentino for 1.7 billion euros from a Qatari investment firm. With the purchase, Kering is seeking to shore up its revenue stream as it struggles to turn around former powerhouse Gucci. Kering on Thursday reported first-half revenues of 10.1 billion euros, up 2%, as Gucci sales stagnate. Under the deal announced Thursday, Kering has the option to buy 100% of Valentino no later than 2028. CAIRO (AP) — Amna al-Nour narrowly escaped death twice. The first was when militias torched her family’s home in Sudan’s Darfur region. The second was two months later when paramilitary fighters stopped her and others trying to escape as they tried to reach the border with neighboring Chad.“They massacred us like sheep,” the 32-year-old teacher said of the attack in late April on her home city Geneina. “They want to uproot us all.”Al-Nour and her three children now live in a school-turned-refugee housing inside Chad, among more than 260,000 Sudanese, mostly women and children, who have fled what survivors and rights groups say is a new explosion of atrocities in the large western region of Sudan. Two decades ago, Darfur became synonymous with genocide and war crimes, particularly by the notorious Janjaweed Arab militias against populations that identify as Central or East African. Fears are mounting that that legacy is returning with reports of widespread killings, rapes and destruct...Aid group official warns that impasse at the UN on border crossing puts 4.1 million Syrians at risk

BEIRUT (AP) — An impasse at the United Nations over a border crossing with Syria’s last rebel-held enclave is putting 4.1 million Syrian there in danger, the president of the International Rescue Committee warned this week.David Miliband’s comments came more than two weeks after the U.N. Security Council failed to renew the mandate for the Bab al-Hawa border crossing between Syria and Turkey, which secures aid for Syrians in the enclave. The vast majority of people in northwestern Syria live in poverty and rely on aid to survive — a crisis that was further worsened by a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit southern Turkey and northern Syria in February. The earthquake killed more than 50,000 people, including over 6,000 in Syria, according to the United Nations. The quake also displaced hundreds of thousands of others.“The people of northwest Syria can ill afford a new wave of suffering, having lived through the trauma of the earthquake,” Miliband told The Associated P...EU agri-food exports back at their April 2022 level amid curtailed trade

The Mets played until nearly midnight, battling through a lightning delay and torrential downpours for nearly two hours Thursday night at Citi Field. When they resumed play in a tie game in the bottom of the eighth with one out and the bases loaded against the Nationals’ Kyle Finnegan, Mark Canha gave them all they needed with a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Pete Alonso.Alonso came sliding in just ahead of the tag to help the Mets (48-54) defeat the Nationals, 2-1.Every win is crucial for the Amazins’ right now and this one was no different. The Mets have continued a frustrating pattern of taking steps forward, only to take more of them back, since the All-Star break. They’ve been no closer to reaching their goal of getting into the Wild Card mix, but they have a chance to gain ground this weekend against lowly Washington. In the first game of the series, the last one before Tuesday’s trade deadline, one of Washington’s future sta...Jake Burger homers twice, but the Chicago White Sox drop their 6th straight with a 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Guardians
