The Mets weren’t able to carry over the joy and excitement of Saturday’s Hall of Fame induction after losing its second straight game, 2-1, to the Toronto Blue Jays.Immediately after Blue Jays manager John Schneider was ejected for arguing a strike call, Vladimir Guerrero Jr’s RBI double gave Toronto the go-ahead run that led to a win.Manager Buck Showalter said he trusted reliever David Robertson to get Guerrero out to end the inning. The manager said he “considered” walking the slugger with Cavan Biggio on deck, who entered Saturday with a .181 batting average.Robertson was ahead, 1-2, in the count but the two-time All-Star reached over to hit a grounder past a diving Bretty Baty at third base.“Just trusted Robbie there,” the manager said postgame. He later went on to say “I just have a lot of confidence in him once he got ahead there … just got a firm ground ball hit where we couldn’t catch it.”Robertson said postg...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed again Sunday to push for a second attempt to launch a spy satellite as she lambasted a U.N. Security Council meeting over the North’s first, failed launch. The North’s attempt to put its first military spy satellite into orbit last Wednesday failed as its rocket crashed off the Korean Peninsula’s western coast. An emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council was still convened at the request of the U.S., Japan and other countries to discuss the launch because it had violated council resolutions banning the North from performing any launch using ballistic technology. On Sunday, Kim’s sister and senior ruling party official, Kim Yo Jong, called the U.N. council “a political appendage” of the United States, saying its recent meeting was convened following America’s “gangster-like request.”She accused the U.N. council of being “discriminative and rude” because it only takes issue with the Nor...

SAN FRANCISCO — A regular fixture in the Giants’ lineup last season, Wilmer Flores has been mostly resigned to a bench role this year. With the 31-year-old veteran receiving an increasingly rare start Saturday, manager Gabe Kapler figured it would be a good time to call him into his office for a pregame chat.“I asked him to come in and shared with him how much I respect how he’s approached this challenging situation,” Kapler said Saturday before the Giants’ second of three games against the Orioles, with Flores penciled in at third base and in the cleanup spot.Already in a logjam at the corner infield spots, with LaMonte Wade Jr. at first and J.D. Davis at third, Flores’ name has been a rarer presence on the lineup card since the arrival of Casey Schmitt and the emergence of Brett Wisely, adding another two infielders to the mix. Saturday marked only his ninth start in 23 games since Schmitt was recalled on May 9.Kapler, who made a 12-year MLB career ou...

NEW YORK (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning, leading the Toronto Blue Jays past the New York Mets 2-1 on Saturday.Guerrero’s big hit came three pitches after Blue Jays manager John Schneider was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Home plate umpire Charlie Ramos called the first pitch of Guerrero’s at-bat, which appeared to land low and out of the strike zone, a strike. Schneider shouted at Ramos from the dugout and was tossed before coming out and arguing at the plate.“Just wanted to give him a little bit of a deep breath there,” Schneider said with a grin. With Cavan Biggio — a .181 hitter who pinch-ran for designated hitter Brandon Belt in the eighth — in the on-deck circle and first base open, Mets manager Buck Showalter chose to have closer David Robertson (2-1) pitch to Guerrero, who fell behind 1-2.“‘Robbie got ahead of him, thought he could expand the zone on him a little bit,” Showalter said. “We just didn’t have much margin for err...
