49ers’ championship window is open regardless of free agency action

49ers’ championship window is open regardless of free agency action As Mike McGlinchey makes his foray into free agency, he does so with mixed emotions, and that likely goes for any of the 49ers’ free agents.“It’s stressful that I’ll be leaving a situation in a Super Bowl window, if that is the case,” McGlinchey said Wednesday on KNBR 680-AM.Yes, the 49ers are in that so-called championship window. It was perennially ajar as they won the Lombardi Trophy five times, from 1981-95. It opened again from 2011-13.The 2019 season saw the 49ers surprisingly step forth again as contenders, and they’ve reached the NFC Championship Game in three of the past four seasons, albeit advancing just once toward a Super Bowl defeat in February 2020.Being a title contender should be the No. 1 drawing card for veteran free agents. But money talks. So “contender” status may not be enough to woo some, whether they’re aging mercenaries or, in McGlinchey’s case, first-time free agents seeking generational wealth.Don’t be alarmed if the 49ers fail to splurge on a household na...
