PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — It took 14 holes, but Scottie Scheffler finally made a birdie Saturday in the PGA Championship. The third round has been a battle among Corey Conners and Viktor Hovland, who started the rainy day tied with Scheffler. Brooks Koepka has moved into contention. He was one shot behind with two holes to play. Bryson DeChambeau is lingering.Scheffler started with a three-putt bogey on No. 1, made another bogey from the bunker on No. 2 and then dropped shots on the sixth and seventh with errant tee shots. He didn’t make birdies and fell as many as five shots behind. He holed a 12-footer for birdie on the 14th to get within four shots. Only nine players are at par or better, and that remarkably includes California club pro Michael Block. He made consecutive birdies and was in ninth place — six out of the lead — going to the 18th. The last time a club pro was among the the top 10 after 54 holes in the PGA Championship was 33 years ago at Shoal Creek.___Canadian Core...Jefe mercenario ruso dice que controla Bakhmut, pero Ucrania lo niega

NORWELL — Isabel Bresnahan’s main focus at Saturday’s waterlogged South Shore Twilight Invitational was to maintain her form in the 400 hurdles on the slick Norwell High track. The Ayer-Shirley freshman did that and a whole lot more as she blitzed the field with a winning time of 67.38 seconds. Bresnahan not only clinched a gold medal but she was on the extremely short list of athletes who set personal bests in the rain swept meet. Bresnahan’s time bettered her school-record mark and left the young talent with a big smile.“I wasn’t in my head too much about it (school record),” she said. “I’ve never run in the rain before. It made my muscles tight. I expected a lot of wind but it wasn’t bad.”Connor Johnson had a day for himself in the 400 hurdles as well. The Bridgewater-Raynham junior and Southeast Conference champion in his specialty was just off his personal best as he held off North Quincy’s Jayden Francois (58.72)...Boston City Council remains at odds over redistricting as deadline approaches

The Boston City Council is making headway on redistricting, but persistent disagreement continues to cast doubt on the body’s ability to reach consensus on a new map, and thus avoid an election delay, by the May 30 deadline.Four different redistricting maps were brought forward for discussion Friday, but Ruthzee Louijeune, chair of the Council’s civil rights committee, opted to dismiss proposals from Mayor Michelle Wu and two other councilors, in favor of using her own map as a “starting point.”“My map makes the fewest number of changes when compared to the baseline map and the enacted, now enjoined, map,” Louijeune said.Louijeune said her map was created with this month’s federal court ruling in mind. It addresses the constitutional violation that occurred on the border of districts 3 and 4, thus also resolving the “domino effect” that took place throughout the rest of the defunct map the City Council approved last fall, via a 9-4 vote, she said.“You look at that domino effect and ...Passenger involved in deadly rollover crash last month identified

BALTIMORE (AP) — Bob Baffert choked back tears and his voice cracked while trying to juggle the feelings of one of his horses winning the Preakness Stakes and another being euthanized on the same track.“This business is twists and turns, the ups and downs,” he said. “To win this — losing that horse today really hurt. ... It’s been a very emotional day.”National Treasure won the Preakness on Saturday in Baffert's return to the Triple Crown trail following a suspension, but it came hours after another 3-year-old colt, Havnameltdown, was put down because of a left leg injury in an undercard race. The victory ended Mage's bid for the Triple Crown in a conflicting scene similar to that of two weeks earlier when he won the Kentucky Derby in the aftermath of seven horses dying in 10 days at Churchill Downs. National Treasure, the 5-2 second choice, held off hard-charging Blazing Sevens down the stretch to win the 1 3/16-mile, $1.65 million race by a head in 1:55.12. “He fought the whole wa...Events that mark beginning of May long weekend on Prairies get smoked out by fires

EDMONTON — A forecast for cooler temperatures and even rain is giving some hope to evacuees and firefighters after thick smoke from wildfires burning across the Prairies forced the cancellation of a number of outdoor activities that traditionally mark the beginning of the May long weekend.A fog-like haze obscured visibility in Edmonton on Saturday giving the city a smoky odour not unlike a provincial park campground, where wood-burning fires are now banned throughout the province due to the fire risk.On Friday, provincial wildfire officials advised Albertans to consider postponing their long weekend plans as nearly 100 wildfires continue to burn throughout the province.“We appreciate the actions of those who have adapted their plans this weekend to help prevent any further wildfires in the province,” Christie Tucker of Alberta Wildfire said during a news conference Saturday. The City of Edmonton had planned to open the Fred Broadstock outdoor pool on Saturday morning with...Baffert’s National Treasure wins Preakness, hours after one of his horses euthanized
