Mental health pilot program launching in Lark Street neighborhood of Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Local officials said a multi-pronged approach is needed to address public safety, and they are trying to improve access to treatment for people suffering from mental health challenges.A new initiative meant to do that is launching this week in the Lark Street neighborhood of Albany. Teams of police officers and social workers are going into the neighborhood to help assess the needs of community members who are homeless. Students at Adams City High School held a walkout against gun violence on Tuesday.Freshman Aliyah Acevedo, who organized the event with approval from the school, said she wanted to show support for East High School as well as her fellow students who have experienced their own incidents of gun violence. Addressing a gathering of students and educators inside the gym before the walkout, she said, “You guys shouldn’t be scared that you’re going to go to school and not going to come home. You shouldn’t have to read the obituaries of your classmates. You deserve to graduate, to go to college, to finish your studies.“We want to learn. Eaglecrest High School canceled classes Wednesday and other school activities starting Tuesday after the death of a teacher over the weekend who passed away from symptoms consistent with bacterial meningitis.In a letter sent to parents and obtained by Denver7, the Cherry Creek School District identified the teacher as Maddie Schmidt.In the letter, the district said it is working with the Arapahoe County Public Health Department which would be reaching out to school staff and families of students who might have been in close contact with the teacher.“The school and district have assisted ACPH in contact tracing to determine what students or staff members have been in close contact with the infected person. A pedestrian was killed Tuesday afternoon after he was struck by a vehicle on the 5 Freeway near Anaheim.It happened around 4:05 p.m. on the southbound side of the freeway just south of Magnolia Street.According to the California Highway Patrol online incident log, the pedestrian was walking in the carpool lane and was hit by a white pickup. CHP said that the pedestrian, identified only as a male, may have jumped in front of the vehicle.The pedestrian's lifeless body was blocking both the carpool lane and the far right lane, CHP noted.A coroner was called to the scene to assist with the removal of the pedestrian's body. All lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway were closed in the immediate area as part of the investigation. (BCN) -- A 33-year-old man has been convicted of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of a San Francisco Department of Public Works employee who was painting over graffiti when he was shot in the city's Mission District in 2016, prosecutors said Tuesday.
