...Honduras adopts El Salvador-style tactics in anti-gang crackdown on prison inmates

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Authorities in Honduras forced inmates to sit half-naked in tight rows while they searched for contraband in a sweep of prisons Monday, similar to the harsh tactics of neighboring El Salvador. They also arrested a suspect in a weekend pool hall shooting that killed 11 people. The prison sweep demonstrated the Honduran government’s resolve to crack down on gangs following last week’s gang-related massacre of 46 female inmates in the worst atrocity at a women’s prison in recent memory. Police said they were considering the possibility that the pool hall shooting on Saturday was related to the prison violence. On Monday, the military police — who have taken charge of the nation’s prisons — posted photos of male inmates forced to sit in rows, spread-legged and touching, during a raid to seize contraband in one prison.Such tactics — with inmates clad only in shorts, their heads bowed onto the backs of the men in front of them — were made famous last year by Sa...Denver weather: A shot at 90 degrees before rain returns to cool us down

MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng and state Transportation Secretary Gina Fiandaca assured state legislators that the T is making progress in efforts to make its system safer and more reliable Monday as they took part in a hearing before the Joint Transportation Committee. The hearing held at the State House aimed to examine safety within the T. “We use the system, our families use the system and we are committed to improving the MBTA,” Fiandaca said. Monday’s meeting came after a Harvard PHD student was injured back on May 1 when a heavy utility box fell on her at Harvard station in Cambridge. Two months before the utility box fell, a ceiling tile nearly struck a passenger at the same station. MBTA officials later determined that a corroded support strap led to the utility box falling.Speaking this week, joint committee Co-Chair William Straus said he wondered how inspectors could have missed the corrosion. “If they were already looking at ceiling tiles, they’re lookin...Crews battle fire at home in Milford

As Sam Nelson, a first-class passenger on a Dubai to London flight that’s taken over by terrorists in Wednesday’s AppleTV+ series “Hijack,” Idris Elba creates a different kind of hero. When everyone else freaks as an armed crew bark orders, threaten murder and pistol whip the pilot, Sam keeps cool. A professional business negotiator, he’s versed in knowing that no solution is possible until both sides find common ground.“As a producer and talent, I was interested in doing something that hits the mark on television. I love television,” Elba, 50, said yesterday in a virtual press conference from his native London. He looked very much the star in matching short sleeve shirt, sox and shorts.Asked if his good looks ever get in the way with a role, “I’m getting a lot of love today, thank you very much. It’s all subjective,” he said. “I’m sure I’m not good looking to everyone. My size and shape – all my life, ‘Oh you’re a big man!’ I’ve taken on roles that feed into it.”On “Hijack,” “I’m p...Latest news
