MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers clinched the NL Central title with help from the MLB-leading Atlanta Braves.Milwaukee claimed the division crown for the third time in six seasons Tuesday night, despite a 4-1 loss to the last-place St. Louis Cardinals and with the help of a come-from-behind win by the Braves.Milwaukee clinched its second division crown in three seasons when the Chicago Cubs dropped a 7-6 decision to the Braves. Atlanta overcame a six-run deficit to eliminate the wild-card contending Cubs from the division race. The Milwaukee crowd roared as the ninth inning of the Cubs-Braves game was shown on the scoreboard.“You could just sense something was going on in the stands a little bit,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said. “Then I turned behind me and looked down the tunnel and some of the clubhouse guys were scurrying around way too fast for us losing 4-1. So I knew something was going on then.”The Brewers had clinched no worse than a wild-card berth o...Matt Wallner hits grand slam to help Twins beat A’s 11-3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Matt Wallner hit a grand slam in a five-run first inning, Alex Kirilloff added a two-run homer and the Minnesota Twins beat the Oakland Athletics 11-3 on a cold and drizzly night Tuesday night.Wallner’s second career grand slam went an estimated 463 feet high into the right-field seats, the 13th homer of his rookie season, off Oakland starter Paul Blackburn.“I’ve got a bad neck, I could barely get my eyes to where that ball was going,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “One of the furthest balls I’ve ever seen hit. Ever. That’s 20-something years of professional baseball. Like truly like a rocket as it went into the night. A nice way to start the game off, but then the rest of the game there were some really good things too.”Christian Vázquez added a three-run double for Minnesota, the AL Central champion that started its final home series of the regular season against the Athletics, who lost their 109th game, the most for the franchise since losing 117 in 1916 w...Braves score twice on Suzuki’s fielding error, overcome 6-run deficit to beat Cubs

ATLANTA (AP) — Sean Murphy reached on a two-run fielding error by right fielder Seiya Suzuki in the eighth inning and the major league-leading Atlanta Braves overcame a six-run deficit to beat the Chicago Cubs 7-6 on Tuesday night.“I thought it was going to get caught, but it (was lost) in the lights or whatever happened, I don’t know,” Murphy said. “It’s good to be lucky some days.”The victory eliminated wild-card contending Chicago from the NL Central race, giving the title to the Milwaukee Brewers.Suzuki ran to his right and called off center fielder Cody Bellinger, but apparently lost the fly ball in the lights and dropped it. Drew Smyly (11-10) aided the comeback by throwing two wild pitches in the eighth, letting Matt Olson advance to third and setting the stage for pinch-runner Forrest Wall to steal second.“I was actually seeing it pretty well until the very last second,” Suzuki said through a translator. “I honestly thought it went into my glove, so it was just t...90 people now living in former Denver hotel

DENVER (KDVR) -- Earlier this week, the Colorado Rockies set a new franchise record for most losses in a season, but that number will likely continue rising until the season ends on Oct. 1.But on Tuesday, the Rockies passed a milestone: 100 losses in a single season. The loss came during the second game of a day-night doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. While this isn’t a common milestone, nearly every team in the league has been there since the 162-game season was adopted in the early '60s. The Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees are the only five exceptions. House Republicans are in another titanic battle with President Joe Biden on how to balance the budget. Actually, it’s a lopsided debate because Democrats have no interest at all in reducing the deficit. They are operating under the delusional idea paradigm of “Modern Monetary Theory,” which posits that the U.S. government can borrow $2 trillion from now until the end of days and it won’t hurt the economy. Were these presidential advisers the same Nobel-winning economic sages who swore in the pages of The New York Times that, don’t worry, Mr. Biden, your $6 trillion spending spree won’t cause inflation? Those of us who live down in here in the real world are horrified by the fiscal future we’re facing. Any week now, our publicly traded debt will exceed 100% of our total annual national output, and that percentage gobbled up by government debt is expected to accelerate from 100% of gross domestic product today to nearly 200% over the next 30 yea...Editorial: Congress should lose pay if gov’t shuts down

Rep. Matt Gaetz’s request to have his pay withheld during a potential government shutdown can be seen as pure political posturing, but the Florida Republican is on to something. The Hill reported on his letter to Catherine Szpindor, House chief administrative officer:“It is my understanding that pursuant to the Constitution, members of Congress will continue to receive their pay during a lapse in appropriations. Therefore, I am requesting that in the case of a lapse of appropriations beginning at 12:00 a.m. on October 1, 2023, my pay be withheld until legislation has taken effect to end such lapse in appropriations in its entirety,” he wrote. This should be the standard course of action for all in Congress – and the White House. If no consensus is reached on spending and there’s a government shutdown, millions of federal workers face delayed paychecks, including any of the 2 million military personnel and more than 2 million civilian federal workers. However, President...Latest news
