THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Things didn’t go well for the Los Angeles Rams after left tackle Alaric Jackson hurt his hamstring in a loss at the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. As they prepare to play at Indianapolis on Sunday, the Rams are preparing contingency plans if Jackson cannot play. The Rams (1-2) held a walkthrough Wednesday instead of practicing because of the quick turnaround, but coach Sean McVay estimated that Jackson would not have been able to participate. As far as Jackson’s chances to play this week, McVay would not speculate.“I think we’re going to find that out, so we’re taking that a day at a time,” McVay said. “He’s feeling good and I know that’s what he’s hoping for, and that’s certainly what we’re hoping for too.”Zachary Thomas, a second-year player from San Diego State, replaced Jackson. It was a struggle as the Rams gave up five sacks in the second half, with Thomas apparently at fault on at least two of those plays.“He came in and competed the best that h...Attorney for Suzanne Morphew's husband releases statement after her remains were found

The Broward Sheriff’s Office is giving back to the community it serves by donating almost $900,000 to 88 different nonprofit organizations through its Law Enforcement Trust Fund. The funds, totaling nearly $900,000, were confiscated during various felony investigations.State law allows law enforcement agencies to reinvest these funds into the community, and BSO has taken this opportunity to support various initiatives that enhance the quality of life for residents.“As a public safety organization, we’re responsible for also injecting into the quality of life for the individuals. It’s not just chasing down and arresting individuals, but looking at the societal problems, the social issues, and then understanding that we’re not the only ones that are trying to fight for this community,” said BSO Sheriff Gregory Tony. Each of the 88 nonprofits received $10,000 in grant funding, empowering them to continue their vital work and address important social i...Without Lionel Messi, Inter Miami loses 2-1 to Houston in US Open Cup final

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi couldn’t play, and the Houston Dynamo took full advantage to win a trophy on his home field.Griffin Dorsey and Amine Bassi scored first-half goals and Houston — with NBA star James Harden, part of the team’s ownership group, looking on from the stands — topped Messi-less Inter Miami 2-1 on Wednesday night to win the U.S. Open Cup.Josef Martinez scored in second-half stoppage time for Inter Miami, but it wasn’t enough as Messi could only look on from the team bench area.Messi was not on Inter Miami’s active roster for the match because of a leg issue, marking his fourth absence in a span of his last five games combined for club and country. And it’s unclear if Messi will continue to be sidelined when Inter Miami resumes its push to make Major League Soccer’s playoffs this weekend.Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said Wednesday night that “it wasn’t prudent” to consider playing Messi against Ho...Marlins pull even with Cubs for final NL wild card by beating Mets 4-2 for doubleheader split

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Donald Trump’s rivals laid into him repeatedly during the second presidential debate on Wednesday, ripping the former president for skipping the event as they sought to dent his commanding early lead in the Republican primary.“He should be on this stage tonight,” said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is attempting to establish himself as the leading Trump alternative despite recent struggles to break out from the rest of the back. “He owes it to you to defend his record where they added $7.8 trillion to the debt. That set the stage for the inflation we have now.”Seven GOP candidates squared off at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California for an event hosted by Fox Business Network. Trump instead went to Michigan, delivering a prime-time speech that continued through the start of the debate — attempting to capitalize on the Auto Workers Union strike and trying to appeal to rank-and-file union members in a key state that could help decide the...No silver bullet: Packaging waste plans wrong to prioritize reuse over recycling, finds report

When I was last in Brussels in February to talk with people about PPWR (the EU’s proposals on packaging and packaging waste) on behalf of McDonald’s, I found I was having to explain what PPWR was and what it would mean for consumers, businesses, and the environment. Now I’m back – and things have changedLast time, I said we wanted to stimulate a debate around PPWR — I think I can safely say that has happened. And that’s a good thing. However, for McDonald’s, and many of our partners and competitors from the informal eating-out sector (IEO), we still believe that unintended consequences of the current PPWR proposal mean it will be bad for the environment, the economy, food safety — and for consumers.Put simply — we believe a mix of packaging solutions is the only way to achieve PPWR’s broader objectives. We base this on independent research by global management consulting firm Kearney in the report, No Silver Bullet, and on current market experience. Put simply — we believ...The F-gas ban consequences we haven’t considered

Thomas just moved into a new home and is committed to making it more energy efficient. He wants to replace the aged boiler, which relies on fossil fuels, with an electric heat pump. He has been reading about his government’s plans to support the rollout of millions of heat pumps to reach Europe’s decarbonization and energy independence goals. Unfortunately, the European Union has banned fluorinated refrigerants, and his home isn’t a suitable application for equipment using so-called ‘natural’ nonfluorinated refrigerants. It seems he’s stuck with his gas boiler — and Thomas is one of hundreds of thousands of EU citizens who will potentially experience the same issue. This is the reality we could face if the EU goes ahead with broad F-gas bans, which are under serious consideration at the trilogue discussion between the European Parliament, European Commission and Council of Ministers. While exemptions have been offered as safeguards to industry, we risk an enormous impact on con...Meet Big Tech’s British bulldog

LONDON — In Big Tech’s battle with the British government, it just hired itself a big new gun.Veteran free marketeer Matthew Sinclair, who headed influential right wing think tank the TaxPayers’ Alliance before becoming chief economist to the ill-fated and short-lived Liz Truss premiership, is set to become the U.K. face of a notoriously punchy U.S. tech lobby group. The Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) has been a longstanding feature of the lobbying landscape in Washington and Brussels, but Sinclair is the group’s first hire in London, reflecting growing tension over digital rulemaking in the British capital since it left the EU.“London is the first new office outside of Washington and Brussels. That shows how critical the U.K. is to the digital sector globally,” said CCIA president Matt Schruers in a call with POLITICO.“Britain is charting its own path outside the EU, and exploring new legal and regulatory approaches.”The CCIA, whose members include predomi...Latest news
