Sickened sea animals are washing up along the coast of Southern California and experts are blaming an algal bloom for poisoning the marine mammals. The Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, which is the only rehabilitation center for these types of animals in Los Angeles County, is filled to capacity and the situation, according to experts, only appears to be getting worse. While some of the thousands of sea lions and elephant seals at care centers are healthy and ready to be returned to the wild, many others are not and require special care, medication and treatment. "We’re seeing a really large algal bloom off the coast of California, specifically Central and Southern California,” John Warner, CEO of the Marine Mammal Care Center, told KTLA. “It is a toxic algal bloom that causes domoic acid within our sea lion and dolphin populations, especially.” Marine mammals poisoned by domoic acid can be prone to seizures, aggression, vomiting and foaming a...Blown out by Blue Jays, Oakland A’s are back on record-loss pace

As we approach the cacophonous Fourth of July holiday, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office coaxed residents to turn over nearly 400 pounds of fireworks in the county’s first “buy back” program. In recent years, booms and hisses have become the Peninsula’s summer soundtrack, starting at sundown and going well into the night. Fires are ignited, nerves get frayed and pets cower under beds.At the Sunday event, modeled after the popular gun buyback programs, community members earned up to $75 in cash, based on weight, by turning in their fireworks. The county’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians collected many illegal and potentially deadly pyrotechnics such as military grade smoke grenades, M-80s, aerial rockets and mortar style fireworks.Fireworks are prohibited in all Bay Area counties, with some exceptions in some cities for the “safe and sane” varieties, which are neither projectile nor explosive. “Safe and sane” fireworks include fountains, sparklers, smokeballs, snake-t...VIDEO: Employee held at gunpoint during armed robbery at Oakland donut shop
