Local property tax relief? Governor’s plea is finding few takers — as state rebuffs Douglas County’s own attempt.

After a bruising, losing battle over Proposition HH, a breakneck special session and a public plea from Gov. Jared Polis for local governments to lower their property tax rates, further relief appears to be a trickle more than a torrent for Coloradans.Few local officials have taken up Polis’ request so far, including in metro Denver. And Douglas County, which separately had pursued a 4% across-the-board cut to residential property values, was rebuffed Monday when a unanimous state board rejected the move, citing fairness and the impact on other taxing entities, including schools. The decision added a crosscurrent to the larger suggestion by Polis: That the state’s hundreds of taxing districts voluntarily take a smaller piece of the property tax pie by temporarily reducing their mill levies. Those are the tax rates used to calculate tax bills, and they will be finalized as the budget season wraps up in coming weeks. The mill levies don’t need to be certified until ea...Broncos Mailbag: Can Sean Payton’s offense generate enough production to finish season 3-0?

The Colorado Rapids’ front office will be looking to put the word ‘super’ in SuperDraft on Tuesday.Colorado has a total of six 2024 MLS SuperDraft picks, with four in the first round, three in the top 15 and two in the top five, creating one stellar opportunity to add depth to a roster that needs it. Halfway to the 12 days of ‘Pidsmas’ or not, the mood around Colorado’s front office is one of intrigue.“We’re full steam ahead on the SuperDraft,” Rapids sporting director Fran Taylor told The Denver Post last week. “That’s a particularly exciting draft pool considering it’s the first time you can take underclassmen outside of the (Generation Adidas) process. It’s just a ton of interesting underclassmen that are gonna be involved this time around.”The stakes are high on Colorado, which has the Nos. 2, 4, 12 and 21 picks in the the first round. It’s the first time Colorado has at least three first-round picks since 2000, t...What you should know about the deadly outbreak tied to cantaloupes

Hundreds of people in the U.S. and Canada have been sickened and at least 10 people have died in a growing outbreak of salmonella poisoning linked to contaminated whole and pre-cut cantaloupe.Health officials are warning consumers, retailers and restaurants not to buy, eat or serve cantaloupe if they don’t know the source. That’s especially important for individuals who are vulnerable to serious illness from salmonella infection and those who care for them. High-risk groups include young children, people older than 65 and those with weakened immune systems. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is especially concerned because many of the illnesses have been severe and because victims include people who ate cantaloupe served in childcare centers and long-term care facilities. Here’s what we know about this outbreak:How many people have been sickened in the cantaloupe salmonella outbreak?Overall, at least 302 people in the U.S. and 153 in Canada have been sickened in this o...Skelton: Most California Democrats don’t want U.S. siding with Israel

This just seems startling to me: California Democrats think overwhelmingly that America should not take sides in the horrific war in Gaza. But Republicans side strongly with Israel. That’s based on a statewide poll conducted by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California. It’s startling because for most of my life, the Democratic Party has emphatically backed Israel and has been solidly supported by Jewish voters and campaign donors. Democrats and Israel have been closely tied.“Democratic candidates get support from Jews because of social issues and their advocacy on behalf of people of color and those struggling financially. That’s the Jewish culture,” says longtime Democratic strategist Darry Sragow, who is Jewish.Bob Shrum, a former Democratic strategist who now is director of the Center for the Political Future at USC, points out that “the Democratic leadership still firmly supports Israel. When director Matthew Brown was ready to cast “Freud’s Last Session,” a film that imagines a conversation between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis, it was Anthony Hopkins he thought of first to play the father of psychoanalysis.“Anthony Hopkins, that was always the No. 1 you could ever dream of getting,” Brown says. “I wasn’t surprised when he said no at first. I think he was in the midst of [the film] ‘The Father.’”But Brown didn’t give up on the dream. He worked on the script that he co-wrote with Mark St. Germain, who had written the stage play upon which the movie was adapted, and found a way to get it back in front of Hopkins once more.“When he said yes, it was basically ‘game on’ at that point,” Brown says.Matthew Goode as C.S.
